Recap: Black Young Professionals conference 2019
On 3 September, 15 of our people attended the inaugural Leadership and Development conference in London, put on by Black Young Professionals (BYP); an organisation who have created the largest network of black professionals. We at Grant Thornton were proud to take the exciting opportunity to sponsor the event, along with a handful of other organisations. As a sponsor, we were able to invite a number of our talented colleagues to attend the conference, as well as manning a stand ready to chat, learn and share ideas.
800 young black professionals were in attendance on the day, from eager graduates about to embark on their professional journey, to entrepreneurs who were there to impart their knowledge and advice. The day consisted of a number of interactive panels, seminars and workshops which were led by a variety of speakers covering topics, such as, “executive presence”, “journey to leadership”, “confidence is a mindset” and much more. Our very own Partner, Amaechi Nosfor took part in a panel titled ‘Our part in Africa’, where he provided excellent insight into how he transformed his own passion and ‘side hustle’ into the role he now does at Grant Thornton.
For us on the stand, it was an amazing opportunity to network with a large number of young talented people about their careers, the barriers they have faced and their aspirations for the future corporate world. We took this opportunity to listen and LEARN, LEARN, LEARN how we can be more inclusive as an organisation, in doing so enabling us to attract and retain more black talent to our firm. We came away from the day not only feeling positive but inspired; armed with ideas on how we can better support the black working community in the future. We are looking forward to working with BYP in the future to continue our drive towards inclusion.
